One of our specialities is in dealing with psychiatric injuries. These can happen as a result of the shock of experiencing a life-threatening accident (such as post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD), or it can be a more gradual process where someone struggles to come to terms with their physical disabilities or the changes to their life. Often the psychiatric injury can be even more serious and disabling than the physical one.
Psychiatric and psychological injuries can also result from physical damage to the brain, causing problems like changes in mood, loss of temper, memory problems, problems with planning and organisation, or issues with communication.
Sometimes mental and physical symptoms can combine to produce chronic pain conditions in which a victim's mental health causes them to experience their physical symptoms more severely, which in turn damages their mental state, in a kind of vicious circle.
It can be easy to overlook the mental health aspects of an injury, where the physical damage it more obviously a problem. However, dealing with psychological injuries can often be key to improving outcomes for both mental and physical health.
